Galatians 4:4-7 New International Version

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

All this is possible because God loves us that much. All this is possible because of the birth of a little baby. All this is possible because a woman and a man were obedient. They put their faith, in fact, their entire lives into God’s hands. All this is possible because of Jesus.

I hope you had a beautiful Christmas, filled with all the things we love about the season. We will continue to commemorate the birth of our Lord and Savior through Epiphany on January 6, the day we celebrate the coming of the Wise Men. Now that the big festivities are behind us, we will start to settle back into our normal routines. I am not sure we really should. If you stop to contemplate what it is we are celebrating, we should be whooping it up every day! Jesus came down here in all the messiness of the world to redeem us! Now each one of us can truly say we are “God’s child.”

I can’t help but think of the song recorded by Faith Hill a few years back, “A Baby Changes Everything,” written by Wiseman, Nichols & Wiseman (so worth an internet search if you don’t know it). Baby Jesus certainly did change everything for us. As the winter cold settles in and the holiday decorations are put away, hold that thought close to your heart. Let the love he brought with him warm you. Let his light brighten your days. Let the change that Baby Jesus made in our world make a change in you all over again…something to pray about.
