Genesis 2:2-3 New International Version
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Did you know that terrible accidents can happen when you are denied your rest? Three Mile Island terrible or Exxon Valdez horrible! The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration estimates 100,000 accidents per year can be attributed to drowsy driving. Science has proven to us the hazards of going without rest. According to WebMD, lack of sleep can lead to all manner of heart disease, depression, weight gain and skin aging. It makes you forgetful and impairs your judgement. Not getting your proper rest is just plain bad for you. It is also bad for your spirit.
We were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). God decided to rest from his labors. He blessed the seventh day and made it holy. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know lots of people who live under a constant barrage of activity. Their schedules are so jam packed and their personal to-do lists are unending. They function in a sort of frenzy. They actually feel guilty for a few moments of inaction and it makes them uncomfortable. Where is their Sabbath? When is your time for rest and reflection? There always seems to be so much going on these days; but even in a busy family, there should be a regular time to step aside and unwind, to rest . We were made in the image of God. Something to remember…something to pray about.
