Wednesday Word 10.17.18

Psalm 46 New International Version
God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”
Stop worrying yourself into an ulcer. Stop racing around in a frenzy trying to win the mythological prize. Stop being consumed by the “what if?” Stop tormenting yourself over what was. It is done. You are still breathing. Do something different if necessary. Stop trying to impress everybody. Stop letting fear dominate your life. Be still and know.
We cannot stop the earth from quaking or the roaring winds and raging sea from wiping out a city. No amount of worry or fear or rumination will stop the world from turning. We have to accept the fact that we cannot control everything. It is one thing to say it. We might even mean it. But, then we go right on as though we were the boss. I sometimes wonder if we are insulting God. Maybe it is disrespectful to continue to behave as though we can control the world around us. Be still and know.
It is hard to appreciate the beauty around you at eighty miles per hour. It is hard to wonder at the blue of your Beloved’s eyes if you are too busy to really see his face. Can you remember the sound of your mother calling your name? Or the taste of your grandma’s chicken and dumplings? All the love in the world can be lying at your feet, but if you are too consumed with self to notice…be still and know.
God will be exalted in the earth, among all nations. Whether we realize it or not. It is his earth. He is all power and glory. And, yet, he loves you. Be still and find the joy waiting for you. Be still and accept the love and care and grace and mercy waiting for you…something to pray about.
