Psalm 23 New International Version
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,
for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
David has given us the most beautiful image of love and protection. He celebrates the fact that God is the source of everything we really need. Not just the bare minimum; he wants to flood our lives with blessings. With God, we can find the peace of mind we need to be restored and refreshed when life gets to us. Even in the most dire situations, he loves us still. Not only does he protect us, but he shows those who might wish us harm exactly to whom we belong. He is going to be with us and help us make our way through this life in the name of all that is good and right, so that others may see the glory of God.
Every time I hear these powerful words, I am reminded that even though I am so small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, God loves me. Me, personally. God cares about what I am going through. I am wrapped up in loving arms. I am a child of God. You, too. Surely his goodness and mercy will follow us throughout this life and carry us into the next. What a reason to rejoice! Now that’s something to pray about.
