1 Chronicles 16:34 New International Version
34 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    his love endures forever.
Forever is a long, long time. We think we get it, but I doubt that we do. I like to think that God-time is completely different from human-time. That helps me to grasp some things in our theology that I might otherwise have difficulty understanding. For example, the whole Creation in a week thing. I believe that it was a God week. I will be returning to church in a Vicki week. Are they the same? It is totally irrelevant to me. God is God and I am just “a moment’s sunlight fading in the grass” (thank you, Yardbirds, 1967). I don’t need to see God’s calendar to believe it. Even so, I hope that my concept of forever turns out to be just an instant compared to the time that God’s love will endure.
We don’t get to know everything. We don’t get to know all the “whys” that we have in this old world. That is what faith does for us, even though we could never deserve it. Faith brings us peace where there is chaos. Faith brings us hope where there is desolation. All thanks are due to the source of that faith, the God who keeps on loving us. Forever…something to pray about.
