Isaiah 43:19 New International Version
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
When I am driving I am focused on the traffic and what is transpiring around me. I rarely look beyond the lanes of traffic (unless, of course, I am in deer territory). My dad would be proud of my driving focus. On occasion, Dan and I will be on our way to some destination and we’ll follow a route that I drive frequently. From the passenger seat, I observe all kinds of things I never saw before, even though I drive that road many times a week. Concentrating on the road is a plus when you’re driving; but, in our day to day lives, tunnel vision can cause us to miss out on what God wants us to see.
It is so easy for us to fall into a narrow groove with our everyday routines and obligations. We become so focused on the road right in front of us that we fail to see the beauty along the way. We may not realize the value of what is around us. The familiar is safe and without challenge. But, as Joni Mitchell said, “Life is for learning.” I think God is waiting to show us so much more than we have ever seen. We have to be ready to look beyond what we have always known and always done. That is not to say that it was wrong in its time. But it is time to open our eyes and see what new thing God has in store…something to pray about.
