2 John 2:5-6 New International Version

And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

John reminds us that this is nothing new. From the beginning, Jesus spoke about love. He told us that first and foremost is the love for God; total, all-encompassing love for God Almighty. Then, we are to love one another. This love is not just lip service. We are to care as deeply for others as we do for ourselves and our own.

What does it mean to “walk in love?” I don’t know for sure. I think it means the way we see the world around us. It is how we interact with the world. I think of all the times I blow it and react to someone’s bad behavior. That is not walking in love. That is a chemical reaction to gasoline being thrown on my little flame. Walking in love is learning to respond to the world, not knee-jerk reacting to it. Walking in love is seeing others as belonging to the same God who made you. Walking in love is seeing creation through the lens of awe and gratitude. I think walking in love means I must practice loving. John says obedience is the way…something to pray about.
