Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 New International Version

1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

a time to search and a time to give up,  a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

No matter what time it is, it is time to pray. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Good times, bad times, scary times, joyous times. Pray and give thanks. This is a hard lesson to master. I know I catch myself in times of worry or anxiety climbing on board the old Fear Train. Sometimes, I am able to jump off before the train can leave the station. Other times, it has roared off and I have to leap off and roll down the embankment, like in an old-time western movie. It is prayer and prayer alone that restores my equilibrium. It is remembering. No matter what is going on in the world around me, I have to constantly remind myself to whom I belong. I have to remember who promised us, “I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). I believe Jesus is with us! Good times, bad times, scary times, joyous times. I believe in the name we chose for our community of believers, Emmanuel…something to pray about.
