Joshua 24:15 New International Version
15 “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
That seems straightforward enough. You must choose. When most of us in this country think of other “gods,” we think of other forms of polytheistic religion. Those of us raised on The Ten Commandments, immediately think of Exodus 20:3, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (I can’t help it, when I think Ten Commandments, I hear the King James Version in my head, spoken by Charlton Heston!). We think that because we were raised hearing about and encouraged to believe in the Lord God Almighty, one God above all, we have it covered. The more I think about it, the more I see the flaws in that thinking.
There are a lot of people who go through life in pursuit of something for which they may or may not have a name. Time, energy, money, all get directed towards that goal. For some it is wealth and financial security. For some it may be the approval of others. There are some folks who spend their whole lives bouncing from one obsessive pursuit to another and never find satisfaction or peace of mind in any. Those are the kinds of false gods we serve today. The things we think will bring us happiness can be the very things that take us further away from our true purpose. They get in between us and the love and mercy of God. They distract us and can lead us down the wrong road.
Choosing to serve God is not always as simple as it sounds. It takes commitment. It takes a lifetime to learn how. It brings with it a peace and a joy that cannot be compared. “As for me and my house…” sometimes we need reminders…something to pray about.
