1 John 4:7-12 New International Version
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
This could not be plainer. God loves us so much that he made a way for us to live, even though we mess up over and over. God loves us so much that he gave his “one and only Son” to carry the burden of our wrongdoings and shortcomings so that we could live on, free from the oppressive weight of our own final reckoning. This kind of love is just too big for us to visualize. This love is God-big. You are loved this much.
When we were little and my immediate family wanted to express our feelings to each other, we said, “I love you no measurement.” We meant that there was no measurement capable of quantifying the love we felt for each other. Words were inadequate. God loves you even more.
Let that knowledge wash over you for a minute. When you stand in the edge of the surf at the beach, the waves just keep coming. You can’t see where the waves come from. You can’t tell how deep they are going to be. But they never stop. Neither does God’s love. Let it wash over you and then let it spill over onto the people around you…something to pray about.
