Ephesians 2:4-5 New International Version
4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
You hear it said all the time. “If it weren’t for you, I’d be lost.” Or, “I would have been a goner!” Bob Dylan wrote “If Not for You” in 1970, a song that essentially says he would miss all the beauty of life without the subject of his verse. The thing is, we really do owe everything to someone. The human condition is such that without grace, our lives are forfeit. We cannot possibly do it on our own, no matter what illusions we may have about ourselves. Without mercy, we would struggle alone in a darkness of our own making; a darkness of fear, shame, hopelessness. If not for the incredible love of God, we would be lost.
But, we are not lost. We are not hopeless. We can be alive with Christ. Not just someday, but we can live with the certain knowledge that he is right here with us right now. He has changed how we can experience this life right now by virtue of his actions and his Father’s mercy. Through that “Amazing Grace” that is there for the asking, we are saved. It is waiting whether you ask or not. Thank you, God. Thank you, Jesus….something to pray about.
