1 Timothy 4:11-14 New International Version
11 Command and teach these things. 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
Regardless of your age, this is a message for you. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young or because you are old. Faithfulness is not measured by age. A relationship with God is not age-limited. We have seen babes-in-arms inspire and encourage people to great acts of kindness and compassion. Likewise, you need never retire from serving in the name of your Savior. Every living soul has something to give.
Did you ever think about all the talented people, unique and gifted and unseen? Thomas Gray wrote, “Full many a gem of purest ray serene, the dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, and waste its sweetness on the desert air.” My dad was a mechanical genius. He left school in the eighth grade and never had the chance to hone his natural aptitude with formal training. What he did instead was help countless people with their car troubles. Neighbors, co-workers, relatives, it really didn’t matter who you were. He was happy to help. I don’t believe that he ever took money for his trouble. You might say that my dad had a sort of mechanical ministry. Paul says we are not to neglect the gifts God has given us. You may not become a Billy Graham who spoke to millions or a Bill Gates who gives away millions. It doesn’t matter. You have been given gifts that you can put to use to honor and glorify God’s name. Study God’s word and find out for yourself just what gifts you were born to share…something to pray about.
