Psalm 42:5 New International Version
“Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.”
It is so easy to get distracted by all the folderol and foolishness that floods our days. We have enough on our plates with the everyday crises and upheavals that are part of navigating this world. That is part of the human condition. It is so easy to forget who made us and to whom we belong. “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience,” according to the French philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Our biggest challenge is remembering it. It takes practice. It takes perseverance. It takes a steady diet of prayer and scripture and an enormous hand from The Holy Spirit.
I cannot say for sure when it began to sink in for me. But, I know this much, I was forever changed. I am still just as flawed as I ever was (I am still working on that). The difference is that I am learning to let go of all the garbage, the guilt and the fear. What an incredible burden to drag around. What incredible joy to lay it down! Life isn’t easy and it isn’t about Pollyanna-like denial. However, the length of time it takes to come to my senses and come to Jesus is ever decreasing. The wave of gratitude that comes along with the realization that I am not alone is overwhelming. Now you know why I am smiling…something to pray about.
