Matthew 6:22-23 New International Version
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
We know a little more about anatomy nowadays, but the point Jesus makes is still as relevant for us. Think “outlook.” If your outlook is dim, a pall will be cast over everything that you see. If I expect to see nothing but bad behavior and ulterior motives in the behavior of everyone around me, I will surely find fault everywhere. If I am swamped by negativity, then the positive would be awfully hard to see. If your attitude is sour, then sweetness will be hard to find.
There are times when situations arise, especially those circumstances that are beyond our control, that are overwhelming to us. Even the most positive individuals will struggle to find the silver lining. That is when we need to step back and regroup. Clear the smoke and the tears from our eyes and turn to the Holy Spirit for help. If I am feeling battered, it is easy for me to fall into a sarcastic, nasty mindset that will prevent me from rising above the muck and the mire Into which I have fallen. Without the love and the light of Jesus, I might just drown in that murky sea! Regardless of the circumstance, I have to be the one to choose my response to the world. I have to choose between darkness and light. I have to choose my own perspective on life. Will it be illuminated by God’s love?…something to pray about.
